Minister of Defence, Pieter De Crem, decided to close, by the end 2011, 23 military bases.
In the list of concerned barracks is the 1st Regiment of Field artillery based in the barracks of Under Lieutenant Heintz to BASTOGNE.

This military camp has a highly important historic past, during the Battle of the Ardennes, called Battle of the Bulge by our friends Américans, the headquarters of the 101th Airborne Division - the screaming eagles - was in one of the blocks of this barracks. Let us remember the famous NUTS answered by this place by the General Anthony Mc AULIFFE at the request of surrender of the Germans on December 22nd, 1944.

This place, which is always in place and almost identical to that of the winter, 1944 - on 1945, is nowadays a historic place of a very big value for the City of Bastogne and the saving of the collective memory.

This "Cellar Mc Auliffe" or " NUTS cellar " is fitted out maintained thanks to a team of volunteers ( http://www.mcauliffe.skyrock.com" target="_blank ) .
Last years very numerous American veterans visited this place and the commemorative medal of the City of Bastogne was put handed to them in these premises.

It is necessary to remind that the majority of the soldiers did not know the place where from emanated the orders during this famous battle, it is to say that they are moving moments for these heroes and their families.
It is necessary to us to mobilize right now to protect this place - it is the slightest services which we can return to our liberators. If nowadays we inhale an open air in a free country it is thanks to them!!!
