Atlantikwall, Batteries and Bunkers
After several, mainly Dutch and German publications on the Atlantikwall Rudi Rolf compiled a brand new book in English: Atlantikwall, Batteries and Bunkers. The book combines the elaborate content of the German publication Atlantikwall, die Bauten der deutschen Küstenbefestigungen (1998) and the systematic approach in the trilingual Atlantic Wall Typology (2004).
Essential German documents, like the minutes of Atlantikwall meetings with Adolf Hitler, are printed in translation, while exhaustive lists of bunkers built and batteries constructed are depicted together with clear maps of coastal sectors. The historical description of the Atlantic Rampart is preceded by an introduction on German fortification with the Imperial fortresses, the Flanders Coast during WW I and German rearmament in the 1930s, culminating in the construction of the Oder-Warthe-Bogen and the Westwall (Siegfried Line), as well as the fortification of the German isles (Heligoland).
The Atlantikwall itself is described from a historical point of view, with emphasis on its development in the early war years, the extension of coastal artillery defence, and -ultimately - the release of the Atlantikwall construction programme in the West. Attention is also given to other German defence positions, like the Gothic Line in Italy and the Ostwall (Eastern Rampart) in the former Soviet Union. The book is concluded by a geographical survey of fortifications constructed and batteries installed.
Atlantikwall, Batteries and Bunkers is bound, hard-covered and counts 464 pages in full colour print. Illustrations are many: nearly one thousand plans of standard bunker designs and special constructions, over one hundred maps of fortresses and coastal sectors, as well as 360, mainly colour photographs, many of which date from the pre-graffiti era.
Its price is € 75, including shipment within the EU (non-EU + € 10).
